Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green has asked for a fulfillment of the sister city relationship between Caracas and Georgetown.

Green on Thursday urged Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to take the proposal to the municipal authorities of Caracas, with whom he said an agreement was formulated, but never realised.

The Mayor was speaking at a civic reception at the Promenade Gardens in honour of the historic visit by the Venezuelan Head of State who was presented with a key to the city.

Green advised against the visit being seen a mere social event. Rather, he hoped that it would create conditions for a long lasting bond of friendship between the two countries.

He asked Chavez to appreciate the historical relationship between the two countries while also forging to overcome the unhappy legacy shared.

A border controversy between the two countries has affected oil and natural gas exploration in Essequibo, to which Venezuela has laid claim.
