Three knife-wielding bandits on Thursday robbed a group of overseas-based Guyanese of an undisclosed sum of foreign currency at the Dharm Shala, wounding one person in the process.

Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent David Ramnarine could not ascertain yesterday whether any formal report regarding the incident had been lodged but confirmed that authorities have been alerted in the Albouystown area where the Dharm Shala home for the indigent is located.

A source from the institution told Stabroek News the bandits struck shortly before 1 pm just as the victims, who had earlier distributed food to residents there, were preparing to leave.

It appears that the bandits invaded the premises using a back entrance since the front gate was protected by a security guard, the source said. The victims were "very shaken afterward and the injured person was taken to the hospital."

About ten minutes after the attack, security personnel summoned from the private firm contracted by the Dharm Shala arrived on the scene, but the bandits had already made good their escape.
