Dwayne `Road Hog' Gibbs opened his account in the 2004 cycling season with a victory in the National Sports Commission's (NSC) sponsored Mashramani 45-mile Cycle road race yesterday.

Gibbs, who returned one hour 43 minutes 05.70 seconds in winning the event which got underway from the Demerara Harbour Bridge, also copped one of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs. Second place went to Gordon Kennedy while Andrew Reece placed third. The fourth, fifth and sixth places were occupied by Vinesh Narine, Samuel Barker and Junior Niles respec- tively.

Tyrone Hamilton, Talim Shaw, Lloyd Chichester, Marlon Morrison, Phillip Piggot, Kennedy and Narine all won one prime prize each.

Soon after being sent on their way, there were several minor breaks but none were established until around the Uitvlugt area when Paul Choo-Wee-Nam, Shaw, Hamilton, Sherwin Osbourne and Warren McKay went to the front of the pack and opened a lead of approximately one mile.

The five stayed at the front of affairs to the turn back point at Parika, but headed for home, they were `sucked' in by Gibbs, Kennedy, Raymond Newton, Reece and Narine.

Gibbs subsequently countered and Kennedy, Reece and Narine responded.

The quartet stayed together until approaching approximately 200 metres for home when the sprint for the line started and Gibbs held off the challenge from the other three. The presentation of prizes to the respective winners was done by Director of Sports Neil Kumar.
