The majority of government entities have begun using a new computerised system to ensure financial accountability and while there have been some hitches most have received clearance to proceed with salary payments for January.

IFMAS (Integrated Financial Management and Accounting System) programme is part of the administration's drive to improve financial transparency and accountability, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported on Monday.

But while the stipulated date for payment of salaries in government ministries this month was January 15, delays have occurred owing to hiccups in implementing the new IFMAS.

However, Secretary to the Treasury, Neermal Rekha has disclosed that the majority of government ministries, departments and agencies have received clearance to proceed with payments of January salaries.

In a continued effort to ensure that the system is implemented with minimal disruptions, the Ministry of Finance plans to hold a follow-up meeting with accounting officers, permanent secretaries or their representatives today.

According to GINA, the new system will greatly reduce the use of cash as well as processing time, enhance advance planning and increase accountability of public officers for transactions.

The IFMAS is part of the Guyana Economic Management Programme (GEMP) - Phase III.
