Former Miss Guyana/ World, Olive Gopaul, has been elected by Global Beauties to represent Guyana in the 2004 Olympic Beauty contest and Guyanese are urged to vote for her online come February 4.

According to the Global Beauties website, "Guyana had high hopes for this student of marketing when she left for South Africa in 2001, where she competed for the Miss World title. Bright, elegant and beautiful, Olive did not place, although many believe she had a good chance to do it."

The website says the Beauty Olympics was created to celebrate and recognise the beauty of women everywhere in the world and for fans and the specialised media to interact and make their own choices. It is a cyber contest, which will take place from January to July of 2004.

The website says all countries can participate, as long as they are represented by women who have participated in any international pageants including Miss Universe or even national contests in the last four years.

It stated that the international finals have the format of simple elimination play-offs, after a qualifying round of competition, where all participants are divided in groups of three or four contestants as determined by a draw. The country with the combined higher percentage will advance to the following round.

Gopaul has been placed in Group 37 and will compete against Benin, Estonia and the Netherlands on February 4 and 5. Guyanese can support her by logging onto their computers on that date and casting their votes in her favour.

When Stabroek News made contact with the beauty, who was adjudged second in the recently held Miss Guyana/Universe pageant, she was not aware of her selection by Global Beauties.

"I am stunned... it is early in the morning and it is great news in the morning. I am happy to know that Global Beauties is still interested in me," she said.

She recalled that when she competed in the Miss World pageant, Global Beauties had named her in its top ten line-up and had voted her Woman of Substance.

She said her selection had made her proud as she saw it as a way of representing her country and being an ambassador, even though she really had nothing to do in the competition.
