The Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, is said to be recovering well after undergoing a triple bypass surgery on New Year's Day.

"He is breathing on his own and he seems well on the way to recovery," Shaun Ramsammy said of his father yesterday from the Stony Brook University Hospital, New York.

Although Ramsammy experienced bleeding complications after the surgery and suffered renal failure and an infection, he was yesterday said to be doing well.

This is the second triple bypass for the 54-year-old Ramsammy, who was appointed Minister of Health in 2001.

The Public Service Minister, Dr. Jennifer Westford, is performing Ramsammy's duties in his absence.
