GOOD things are in store for Buxton, located about 12 miles outside of Georgetown along the East Coast Demerara road.

This is the outcome of a meeting President Bharrat Jagdeo had with U.S.-based mission Jay Bee Medical Services International at the Office of the President yesterday. The President met the group to discuss how government can help them execute their mission of conducting a programme at the Buxton Medical Clinic.

The visiting team comprised the President Verbena Reed, Chief Executive Officer Genevieve Adams, who is a Buxtonian, and Chief Project Manager Michael Benons.

Jay Bee Medical Services International is a group of concerned citizens from various parts of the Caribbean involved in community based holistic health care in rural communities in Guyana. Its major focus is training and skill building.

The group has been coming to Guyana for more than 20 years, and has conducted various health activities, including fairs and outreaches in Buxton. According to Ms. Reed, the group is looking to renovate the Buxton Medical Clinic so that it can provide basic health care services to Buxton and surrounding communities.

Although she declined to comment on the discussions they had with the Head of State, she noted that "wonderful things will be happening for us in the country".

The Christian-oriented organization is funded by its members and donations. The coast of the Buxton project is not yet known, Ms Reed explained, "but God will provide".

According to Benons, what is different about Jay Bee Medical Services International programme is that there will be a strong sustainability component.

Among the team’s objectives are medical team’s periodic visits to Buxton, workshops for local medical personnel, clinics for the under-privileged and elderly and workshops and clinics targeting youths.

When asked why the team chose Buxton, they replied "its like our home".

The CEO is confident that "the project will make a big difference in Buxton because there are lots of things that we will be doing not only for Buxton, but for surrounding communities".
