BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (Reuters) - Marcus Trescothick enjoyed a welcome return to form as England dominated the opening day of their three-day tour game against a Carib Beer XI in Barbados.

The left-hander, standing in for Michael Vaughan as captain, hit his first half-century of the tour as England rattled up 121 for three after skittling out the home side for 129.

Seamer Matthew Hoggard took four for 27 but it was the performance of Trescothick that most delighted the tourists.

He was one of the few England players to struggle in the first two Test victories over West Indies, scoring 18 runs in four innings.

But against an attack, including promising young bowler Jermaine Lawson and former Test player Dave Mohammed, Trescothick looked in much better form.

Having won the toss and decided to bat, the Carib Beer XI lost Xavier Marshall for 19 to Hoggard but former Test batsman Daren Ganga and Sylvester Joseph added 42 for the second wicket.

James Anderson, brought into the side along with wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, Rikki Clarke, Paul Collingwood and Gareth Batty, removed Ganga for 25.

Ashley Giles dismissed Dwayne Bravo for two and Anderson took his second wicket to leave the home side 87 for four at lunch.

Clarke then removed Joseph for 36, the home side's top score, shortly after lunch and Hoggard finished off the innings with the last two wickets, the Carib Beer XI's last nine wickets tumbling for 56.

In reply Mark Butcher (17) and Collingwood (20) missed out, but Graham Thorpe joined Trescothick and the pair took England past 100 in confident fashion.

But after reaching 50 the left-handed Trescothick was bowled by Omari Banks. Thorpe was 25 not out with Chris Read, playing as a batsman, yet to score.
