GUYANA bowed out in the first round of yet another international football championships, when they lost the return leg of the World Cup qualifying series against Grenada, 3-1, at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, yesterday.

At half time the game was deadlocked, 1-1, after Grenada went ahead and Carey Harris equalised for the hosts.

Grenada stitched in two more goals in the second half to end the series, 8-1, having gone into the game with a five-goal advantage.

After the creditable performance of the Under-23 team in the Olympic series, the senior team had high hopes of advancing to the next round to meet the USA.

In fact several of the Olympians were drafted into the senior squad, including captain Shawn Beveney who was elevated to senior captain and average age of the team was 22 years.

The young team’s confidence was boosted when they defeated Barbados, 2-0, in a warm-up match in Barbados, the hosts having put away Grenada twice.

But Grenada brought in several professional players from the United Kingdom, Hungary, Jamaica and the USA, to whip the Guyanese, 5-0, in the first leg in Grenada. They brought eight for the return leg.

However, while the standard of play was not much different, Guyana’s finishing was far from satisfactory, with the two main strikers - Randolph Jerome and Gregory Richardson - seemingly aiming to take glory for themselves and several opportunities were messed.

In the end none of the two scored, the only goal for the Guyanese came from Harris.

Grenada now advance to take on the USA in the second round.
