WEST Indies batsman Dwayne Smith has been ruled out of the first Test against England after suffering a dislocated finger during training.

The 20-year-old, who scored a century on his debut in January in South Africa, injured the fourth finger on his right hand in fielding practice.

"It was a most unfortunate development for the young man," said West Indies team manager Ricky Skerritt.

"But Dwayne has the right attitude and he'll be back stronger than ever."

Doctors will re-examine the injury after the Test, Skerritt said, to assess whether he will miss any further cricket in the four-match series.

The West Indies squad is now reduced to 12 with the final batting place in the side now a straight choice between hard-hitting Ricardo Powell and left-hander Ryan Hinds.

Both also offer the option of providing a few overs of spin.

The majority of the bowling, however, will be done by four pacemen in Corey Collymore, Fidel Edwards, Adam Sanford and Tino Best.

All of them have limited experience at the highest level.
