ATHLETES and officials yesterday began encampment ahead of the 44th Annual National Schools’ Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships, sponsored by Banks Malta in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).

Some 16 districts are housed on the East Coast of Demerara ahead of the championships that officially get under way tomorrow at the Enmore Community Centre ground, with the opening ceremony and march past.

Today cycling and athletics road races will be contested along with swimming.

A 40-mile cycle road race begins at Dundee Mahaicony. A 25-km race for girls pedals off from Fairfield, Mahaicony; a 10-km boys’ road race from the Mahaica Hospital Bus Shed and a 5-km for girls from the Hope Estate Bridge.

All races will end at the Enmore Ice Factory Entrance and will start at 06:00 hrs.

The remaining cycling events will be contested from the Mahaica Old Road.

Swimming will be done at the Enmore Estate Pool.

After the official opening ceremony tomorrow, 108 track and field events will be contested, with 123 for Thursday and 84 on the final day.

All events will take place between 10:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs. There will be no night races.

President of the GTU, Sydney Murdock, at the launching of the championships at the Banks DIH Sales Conference Room had said events are only run in the evening at venues where there are flood light facilities.

This is the third time the championships will be staged at the Enmore Community Centre ground and the North Georgetown District are the defending champions.

They won the championships when it was last staged in 2002 at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.

Past President of the GTU, Lance Baptiste, told Chronicle Sport that all arrangements were in place for the championships that promise to be exciting.

He said that security was paramount and will be provided at the venue and Games villages (schools housing athletes).

Baptiste said that they have received valuable support from the Enmore Policing Group, while Banks DIH has already provided trophies and medals for the various events as well as tents to house the athletes at the ground. The entity will also provide water for the athletes and officials.

The championships were not staged last year due to the teachers’ boycott of the event.
