WEST Indies have named a 13-man squad for the first Test against England on Thursday at Jamaica's Sabina Park.

There is no place for rookie fast bowler Dwight Washington, who is under fire after being reported for having a suspect bowling action.

The 21-year-old Jamaican was named in an initial squad of 16 on March 1.

But when that squad was cut down, Washington lost his place along with reserve wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and spinner Dave Mohammed.

The omission of Mohammed, a 24-year-old left-arm chinaman bowler, suggested West Indies could use a raw four-man pace attack in the shape of Corey Collymore, Fidel Edwards, Tino Best and Adam Sanford.

Washington was reported for his action during the recent first-class domestic championship in the West Indies, but coach Gus Logie denied that was the reason for his release from the squad.

Even if West Indies go into the match without their two spin-bowling all-rounders, Ricardo Powell and Ryan Hinds, they will have Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan available to send down a few overs of slow bowling.

Windies captain Brian Lara, who has a formidable record against England, insisted he was not their team's only hope with the bat.

"The pressure on me to score runs for the team has eased off over the years," he said.

"There are a lot of young players coming through now like vice-captain Sarwan and Gayle, and Chanderpaul has matured into a top-class player that we always thought he could be.

"They have come forward and done well against South Africa. We scored several centuries in that series and that hasn't been the case for a long time."

But he added: "Our problems could lie with the ball. We haven't been able to get the opposition out twice either away from home in South Africa or at home against Australia.

"But we're working very hard on that and our fielding and I hope it's going to be a good all-round effort by our team in this series
