Last weekend, residents of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) gathered on the Essequibo Coast to celebrate Mashramani 2004 with an explosion of colours, sweet Soca rhythms and street dancing. Thousands of persons joined with revellers in a carnival-style road show that featured picturesque float portrayals and wonderful individual costumes.

Led by Region Chairman Mr. Alli Baksh and Regional Executive Officer Mr. Nankishore, the revellers danced their way to the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground to the cheers of thousands of persons, who flocked the roads to admire the procession.

As the revellers and their floats arrived at the ground, pulsating rhythms produced by the flute and drums of the traditional Masquerade Band filled the air.

The road show and float parade began at Three Friends Bridge in the south, some three miles from Anna Regina, and gathered volume and pace as the procession moved to Anna Regina for the final judging and rally.

One of the largest contingents was the band sponsored by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). This band was awarded the first prize, while the group representing the construction section of the Regional Administration claimed the first prize in the float competition.

The Regional Democratic Council placed second in the float competition, while the ‘Big Bird’ production of the Charity Fish Port Complex was awarded the third spot. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
