Woman manslaughter convict among 16 more returned deportees

SIXTEEN more Guyanese were recently sent back home as criminal deportees, most from the United States (U.S.) and others from Barbados and Canada.

They had all committed different offences, according to a Press release from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, which said each departed Guyana legally.

The list reads:

* Julian Jhingaree, 24, of Lot 58 Canje Street, Campbellville, who returned from the U.S. last January 9. He left here on May 24, 1993 and was arrested and charged with assault on April 10, 1997. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and released for deportation at the expiration of the term.

* Courtney Ethelbert Primo, 54, of Lot 716 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, came back from the U.S. last January 17. After departing here in 1984, he was arrested on June 12, 2001 and later convicted of possession of narcotics. Primo was sentenced to two to four years imprisonment but served two and a half years.

* Keon Richards, 21, of Lot 1717 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, returned from the U.S. on December 29, 2003. He left here on May 24, 1995 and, on October 11, 2001, was charged with possession of narcotics, for which he served two years of a five-year sentence.

* Orin Grosvenor, 34, of Lot 1370 Achievement Place, South Ruimveldt, returned from the U.S. on December 29, 2003 after having migrated on February 18, 1979. He was arrested and charged with robbery on August 31, 1992. On conviction, he was sentenced to six to 18 years imprisonment but only served eight years.

* Michael Deonarine, 19, of Lot 6 Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara, came back last February 3. He had been in the U.S. since September 19, 1999, prior to his June 2002 arrest on a robbery charge. He was convicted and put on probation for five years but was against arrested for attempted robbery in October 2002. Deonarine was sentenced to one to three years imprisonment but served only 11 months.

* Eshwar Misir, 40, of Lot 81 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme returned from the U.S. last January 27. He had gone there on May 25, 1983 before his March 9, 1999 arrest for possession of narcotics. He was sentenced to three months in jail and put on probation for a similar period. He was arrested again on September 9, 2001 and taken into immigration custody for deportation.

* Karran Persaud, 54, of Lot 7 Coverden, East Bank Demerara, came back from the U.S. last January 5. He left here in 1990 but, in May 1992, he was arrested and charged with domestic assault. A court put him on probation for one year but, in December 1994, he was again convicted of the same offence and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, of which he completed six.

* Nandram Persaud, 18, of Lot 128 Triumph, East Coast Demerara, returned from the U.S. on December 17, 2003. He had only been there from April 12, 2003 when he was arrested on November 15, 2003 and charged with assault. He appeared in Court and the case was dismissed but he was later re-arrested and taken into immigration custody for deportation.

* Estelle Thomas, 31, of Lot 35 John Street, Lodge came back from Barbados on Mash Day, February 23, 2004. She went there last January 11 and was charged with simple larceny on February 20. She appeared in Court and was fined Bds$500 and ordered to report to the immigration authorities for deportation.

* Hugh Remington Saul, 35, of Lot 41 Number 79, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice, was deported from Canada on December 30, 2003. He had committed offences including assault, trafficking in narcotics, possession of stolen 'Zellers' card and assault causing actual bodily harm, since he went there on May 13, 1989. He served several short jail sentences, the last being one week, before his deportation.

* Victor Mckenzie, 35, of Lot 153 Bluesaki Drive, South Ruimveldt Park, was a January 28, 2004 deportee from the U.S. He was there from March 10,1993. On December 14, 1994, he was arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute narcotics, for he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, at the completion of which he was deported.

* Sylvanus Denny McDonald, 27, of Lot 69 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, also returned from the U.S. on December 30, 2003, after being there from July 2, 1992. He was arrested and charged with possession of narcotics on March 7, 1999, for which he was put on probation for three years, then re-arrested and taken into immigration custody for deportation.

* Russell Eustace Daniel, 54, of Lot 256 East Ruimveldt, came back from the U.S., too, after serving one year imprisonment for possession of stolen articles. He was in the U.S. since 1970 before his conviction in 2000.

* Carlotta Rodney, 35, of Lot 27 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, came back from the U.S. last February 5, having been there from October 1981. She was arrested on May 10, 1993 and charged with manslaughter. She appeared in Court and was sentenced to six to 25 years imprisonment. However, she was released into immigration custody for deportation after serving 10 years.

* Ramanan Ramdeo, 31, of Chapel and Norton Streets, Lodge, returned from the U.S., as well, last February 6. He had been living there since September 10, 1981 until his arrest for assault on December 28, 2001. On conviction, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment, after which he was deported.

The other deportees
Space constraints in our issue of Friday, March 5 2004 resulted in two names and photographs being omitted from the page featuring recent deportees. Here are the two remaining deportees:

* Mark Johnson, 35, of Lot 111 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, also returned from the U.S. on December 30, 2003, after being there since 1975. In the years 1986, 1988 and 1992, he was arrested and charged with smoking a narcotic. He was put on two years probation when he last appeared in Court and was taken into immigration custody on September 11, 2003, for deportation.

* Ramanan Ramdeo, 31, of Chapel and Norton Streets, Lodge, returned from the U.S., as well, last February 6. He had been living there since September 10, 1981 until his arrest for assault on December 28, 2001. On conviction, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment, after which he was deported.
