CORPORAL Clifton Nelson, who was shot twice on Monday in his office at Brickdam Police Station by a former sergeant of police, is still listed as critical. But his condition has been upgraded to stable

Nelson's condition is closely being monitored by doctors ahead of surgery.

He lost a number of teeth after he was shot in the region of the mouth.

The tube which was attached to his stomach to drain blood was yesterday removed by doctors.

Nelson, sitting quite easy on his hospital bed yesterday, said that he is feeling better but he is experiencing a lot of pain, having lost a number of his teeth.

He had several stitches to his injured mouth.

Corporal Nelson is being guarded by the watchful eye of the police who are placed there to ensure his protection.

The injured corporal was yesterday visited by many of his colleagues and relatives, who were elated that he seemed to be on the road to recovery.

Nelson was one of two ranks who were injured when a berserk ex-cop stormed into Brickdam Police Station just after midday on Monday and began shooting wildly. Two others, Assistant Superintendent Richard Griffith and Lance Corporal Ramnarine Lachana, died in the shooting spree.

Constable Kester Cosbert, who was on sentry duty and the first rank to be shot when the ex-cop opened fire in the police station, was treated and sent home. So was constable Royston Paddy, who was slightly injured when he jumped through a window to escape the gunfire.

The ex-cop, subdued after he was shot in the right leg, is under guard at the hospital.

The bloody incident has triggered the reintroduction of heavy security at the station, relaxed following a significant reduction in the crime wave that swept Guyana after the Mash 2002 jailbreak.
