BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) - Guyana, behind second half goals from Neil Hernandez and Gregory Richardson, beat short-staffed Barbados 2-0 in their friendly football international at the National Stadium on Sunday night.

Guyana dominated the game for their first win over Barbados in 17 years with the home team playing the entire second half with 10 men after a red card to John Hawkesworth.

The midfielder was sent off moments before the halftime break for dissent, and Guyana, who had threatened several times in the first half, inevitably took the lead 14 minutes into the second half.

Hernandez picked up a pass just outside the area and outpaced the Barbadian defenders before easily beating Adrian Chase in the Barbados goal.

Richardson engaged in some fancy play before connecting with the solidifying goal in the 88th minute that gave the Guyanese their first ever win over Barbados in Barbados.

He back-heeled a pass to Carey Harris, whose shot was blocked by Chase and the rebound fell for Richardson to score.

“It was a great performance,” Guyana’s Brazilian coach Neider Dos

Santos told CMC Sport.

“The performance was much above my best expectation because we have (only) had about 20 days training, and Barbados much longer. Barbados have been able to play a lot of international matches against Bermuda, Grenada, Canada and so on,” Dos Santos added.

The defeat was the second consecutive loss for the world 111th ranked Barbadians at their National Stadium, having gone down to Canada last month.

Both teams are warming up for CONCACAF World Cup qualifying competition with Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 16th ranked Guyana going into action later this month against Grenada, while CFU fifth-ranked Barbados begin competition at the second stage of qualifying in June.

Guyana, rated 183rd in the world, will play Grenada in their first-leg first round match on February 28, and Barbados play in June against the winner of the St Kitts and Nevis/US Virgin Islands game first round tie.
