GUYANA Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) will not be increasing electricity tariffs for the first quarter of 2004.

The utility company made that clear in a statement yesterday.

"GPL has removed the fuel surcharge of $4.22 that had been applied to the rates for the fourth quarter of 2003 and has increased the basic rate accordingly in keeping with the Interim Return Certificate that was filed recently with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

What this means, GPL says, is that any basic rate increase has been cushioned by the fuel surcharge that has been removed.

It says the customary reviews of the tariff will be undertaken again before next April "to enable the filing of the Final Return Certificate to the PUC."

GPL has also issued a subtle appeal to customers to pay up their light bills to avoid disconnection and at the same time enable the company to provide and maintain quality service to them.

"GPL appreciates the tangible support it receives from its customers throughout the franchise areas across Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo who are contributing toward the sustainability of the company by paying their electricity bills promptly," its statement said.
