REIGNING Junior Calypso monarch Wilbert Levans of Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) has retained his crown for a third consecutive year after defeating 13 other contestants at the finals of the National Junior Calypso Competition at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground two Saturdays ago.

The reigning monarch was the last contestant brought the huge crowd to life. Everyone was on their feet dancing and cheered on the "Little-man dressed in a green outfit from Region 3.

At the end of the calypso the crowd went wild with excitement screaming for Wilbert Levans to come back again and sing "Man Shortage."

Levans is now the soca monarch in the junior calypso competition for this year.

In the runner up positions, there was a tie in the number 2 spot with two contestants gaining 424 points each. Art Austin of Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam) with his peace "Ethnic equality in Guyana" and Melissa Williams of Region 4 with her piece - "Mini Bus Crisis" held the second position.

In the third spot was another contestant from Region 4, (Demerara/Mahaica) Mark Batson with his piece "We defending our country integrity," and the fourth position was taken by Minerva Beaton from Region 4 also who sang "Legislate the brand new plan."

Other contestants who took part in the competition were from Region s1, 4, 5 and 8. Most of the contestants were from Region 4.

The competition was witnessed by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Ms. Gail Teixeira, Region 2 Chairman Mr. Alli Baksh and other senior government officials.

The calypsoians were backed by the Mingles Sound Machine while members of the Shakti String Orchestra provided additional entertainment for the large crowd after the competition ended.

The competition was sponsored by Soca Beverages Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
