THE curtains came down on some impressive and creative displays of talents in dances, masquerades, physical displays and costume competitions as the Georgetown leg of the regional competition ended in fine style at the National Park yesterday.

Apart from two interruptions - the crowding of the tarmac and about three fights among the school children - the day's proceedings rolled along smoothly.

The hundreds of students from city schools who filled the stands got their monies' worth as the participants entertained them with their talented dances in the categories of Interpretive, Religious Beliefs, Legend and Traditions and Social Commentary.

Yesterday's competition focused on the children within the age groups of 11-13 and 14-17 doing dances and masquerades.

As the competition heated up, students apparently were no longer satisfied with looking on from the stands; so they converged on the tarmac, forcing the chairperson to bring a temporary halt to the proceedings.

The help of the Police was later summoned to clear the area as the call by the chairperson went unheeded.

The schools that would be representing Georgetown in the 11-13 age group in the various categories at the Nationals are Christ Church Secondary "Faith", Tucville Secondary, "Christ is the way forward", St. Stephens Primary "Fun in 2004" and West Ruimveldt Primary "African vibes."

Other winners in that category were Thomas More Primary, and Richard Ishmael Secondary.

In the group performance, St. Joseph High School with their interpretive piece "Mash Heat", Charlestown Secondary "Beats of Peace, Love and Unity in the social commentary category, Tucville Secondary "Kingdom styles in 2004" and St. Agnes Primary "African Feelings" in Legend and Tradition category will all be representing Georgetown at the National competition.

The Masquerade competition was poorly represented by the students with four schools participating in the 11-13 individual, and three participating in the group.

In the 14-17 individual and group categories, the only school that took part was the David Rose Community High School.

The Georgetown competitions began on February 03.

From February 18-20, the National Competitions will be held at the same venue.
