Building contractor Poonaswar Dookie, also known as Prem Dookie, is claiming $25M from Chandranarine Sharma of Channel 6 television and Kumar Hardowar for libel, allegedly committed on January 5 and 8, 2004 on television programmes.

In the Writ filed in the Supreme Court Registry yesterday by attorneys-at-law Mr. Mohabir Anil Nandlall and Ms Deborah Kumar, the plaintiff is also claiming an injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their servants/agents or otherwise from further publishing or causing to be published the said libel upon the plaintiff.

In his statement of claim, the plaintiff Dookie says that the first-named defendant is also the host of two programmes aired on the said television station known as ‘Rapping With the Public’ and ‘Voice of the People’.

Dookie claims that on or about January 5, 8 and 13, 2004, the defendants on Channel 6 falsely and maliciously published and broadcast defamatory remarks about him.

According to the plaintiff, the matters referred to meant and were understood to mean that he is corrupt; that he is guilty of fraudulent conduct, and is guilty of financial impropriety among other things.

The defendants have been given ten days within which to enter appearance in the matter. (George Barclay)
