THE National Sports Commission (NSC) officials are hoping to start repairs to the plumbing system of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall this week.

The water system has been out of commission for approximately one month now, thus causing inconvenience to some sporting bodies.

Due to the problem, activities at the most used venue in the country have been put on hold until the problem can be rectified.

Administrative Manager at the NSC, George Green, said that they have received an estimate to undertake the task and are hoping to start work immediately.

He said that the entire plumbing system has to be changed and the work should take about a week since it is a lengthy process.

“Originally we thought that it was an internal problem, but when we checked with the GWI (Guyana Water Incorporated) they informed us that every pipe has to be changed,” Green said.

Green further added that they were taken aback by the problem, as they had to use the services of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) on Boxing Night to supply water for the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) ‘Power Punch Card’.

Green said that the venue receives a limited supply of water.

Due to this problem, the organisers of the current National Inter-Ward Basketball tournament are supplying their own water so that the facilities can be used.

Games are held every Wednesday and Friday through Sunday.

The problem has also hampered the Guyana Table Tennis Association’s (GTTA) programme.

The association, though being allowed to use the venue as a training facility under Chinese Coach Zhou Ping, is not allowed to stage any competitions.

The Two-Player Team Tournament was due to restart last weekend but the prevailing situation prevented progress.

The GTTA were scheduled to complete their remaining three rounds in the tournament before commencing another Two-Player tournament, which will be sponsored by an overseas Guyanese.
