Channel 9 unveils new name in Hoyte's memory

NBTV Channel 9, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, has been renamed Hoyte/Blackman Television Station (HBTV-9) in honour of the memory of the late Former President and Leader of the main opposition party, People's National Congress/Reform (PNC/R), Hugh Desmond Hoyte with the unveiling of a plaque yesterday.


The widow of the deceased Leader, Mrs. Joyce Hoyte, unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion during a simple ceremony held at the television station.


Leader of the PNC/R, Robert Corbin, and party executive member, Ms Deborah Backer, were among those who were present at the occasion.


The bronze plaque, which was placed on the wall of the studio of the TV station is inscribe Hoyte/Blackman Television Station Channel 9 in commemoration of the life and death of Mr. Hugh Desmond Hoyte, SC. President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana 1985 -1992.


Corbin in his remarks said the renaming is significant for the Station and all Guyana. It will serve to remind of the former Leader's power of strength in his leadership of the country.


Reflecting on some of his notable qualities Corbin said he had distinct literacy skills. He wrote poems very well and the elegance was evident. Mr. Hoyte stressed the importance of good literacy presentations.


He also believed in freedom of speech and expressions therefore the installation of the plaque was a fitting tribute from proprietor of the TV outfit Mr. Noel Blackman, Corbin said in congratulating the management of the station for the initiative. (Michel Outridge)
