Dear Editor,

Please be informed that Mr.Samaroo, whose name appeared in the list of signatures on the Ramjattan issue is not a central committee member of the PPP, he is just an ordinary member, and is presently the vice-chairman of the Region #2 RDC.

Yours faithfully,

A. Basir

Editor's note:

We sent a copy of the letter to Mr. Donald Ramotar, the General Secretary of the People's Progressive Party for his comments and re-ceived the following res-ponse from Mr. Ulric Rama-nah, Organising Secretary:

"With reference to a letter by A. Basir, I wish to advise you that Mr. Sama-roo is an ex-officio member of the Central Committee. He attends the Central Committee meeting in his elected capacity as Chair-man of Party Region 9 (Essequibo Coast/Pome-roon).

At the Party's last Con-gress in 2002, the Congress had recommended and adopted a motion to broaden and further deepen the leadership consultation mechanism of the party, thus it decided that the Chairpersons of all Party Regions should be co-opted in the Central Committee. However, they do not enjoy voting rights.

The decision to further include this tier of the Party's organisation in the Central Committee is consistent with the Congress's mandate to ensure greater participation and involvement in the democratic decision making process of the Party.

It is therefore not strange that Mr. Samaroo attended and participated in the Central Committee meeting of January 31, 2004 and signed a public statement disputing false allegations made in your newspaper."
