Dear Editor,

I wan not surprised when President Bharrat Jagdeo told his supporters at Annandale that there was not a shred of evidence linking Minister of Home Affairs Ronald Gajraj, to the Phantom gang.

The appointment of a committee by the People's Progressive Party to enquire into Bacchus' allegation against Mr Gajraj was a case of trying Caesar in Caesar's Court

No other conclusion was possible since through the press most of the PPP supporters felt that the phantom gang did a good job.

The president's disclosure that Mr Gajraj was tried by certain sections of the press left much to be desired since the press are the fourth estate and must ensure that members of the society are protected from any organisation, legal or illegal, that breaches the rule of law.

Mr Jagdeo's disclosure would leave some uneasiness in the society as it was a foundation for administrative absolutism.

It clearly suggests no action will be taken against the Home Affairs Minister who allegedly recommended gun licences to be issued to men of questionable character that made up the "phantom" gang.

Socrates in an appeal to the spirit said: "Will you not think and care about wisdom, and truth, and the perfection of your souls."

Yours faithfully,

Ovid Smith
