The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) has seen 95 per cent of its work programme accomplished, says a release from the Government Infor-mation Agency (GINA).

Among the projects, the Ituni Small Loggers Association received a timber sales agreement this year, through a GFC, Food and Agricultural Organisa-tion (FAO)-funded programme.

Meanwhile state forest permission was granted to the North Rupununi District Development Board (NRDDB).

The GFC is presently training field officers in participatory techniques while the community programme is working with the Upper Berbice Forestry Producers Association, the New Amsterdam Forestry Producers Association and the Region Ten Forestry Producers Association.

According to the release, three forest officers are now permanently stationed in the three counties with open days being held every month when officers from GFC visit and provide the necessary information to the public.

A random sample was done on small concessions as the GFC continued to monitor large concessions this year. Three identification courses were held and a draft code of practices was prepared on the use of manicole, nibbi and kuya.

The release said that research was carried out on plantation establishments and the GFC intends to establish pilot areas next year.
