The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) yesterday launched a special postage stamp to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Guyana and Brazil.

Director-General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elisabeth Harper, said at the launching that the event symbolises not only a historical milestone but also 35 years of commitment to the development of peace, prosperity and unity for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.

Harper said that over the years, Guyana and Brazil have concluded a number of bilateral agreements, which have provided a solid foundation for various cooperation programmes. The areas include health, trade, culture, scientific and technical cooperation, agriculture, as well as cooperation between the law enforcement agencies and military forces.

Both countries have also sought to strengthen collaboration in relation to cross-border activities.

Over the years, too, she said, there have been many exchange visits at the highest level aimed at providing political impetus in developing relations between the two countries, the most recent being that made between President Bharrat Jagdeo in July this year. That visit has resulted in both countries embarking on an enhanced programme of cooperation. The completion of the international bridge across the Takutu River and the construction of the Guyana-Brazil road link were issues which were high on the agenda.

Over the years, too, both countries have worked closely not only at the bilateral level but at all levels for the cause of international peace and security. She said that at the hemispheric and regional levels there is a convergence of views on several issues critical to the development of both countries.
