It was tantamount to pitting a Morris Oxford against a Ferrari; the result was a devastating defeat for one.

On Friday evening, a well-oiled machine named Camp-town steamrolled Eagles United to become the first team from Georgetown to enter the semi-final stage of the prestigious Kashif and Shanghai football competition.

Spurred on by a double from national Under-23 striker Elton Browne, Camptown hammered Eagles 5-1 to book a Boxing Day place against Net Rockers and signal a warning to the remaining teams in the tournament.

The powerful Camptown side almost never released their stranglehold on the neck of Eagles and took target practice at their opponent's goal area throughout the 90 minutes duration.

The winners were excessively severe in the second half when three unanswered goals were scored in as many minutes. In front of a large crowd of supporters and following numerous near misses, the host team went ahead in the 12th minute.

National mid-fielder Leslie Holligan pounced on a loose ball inside the box and fired a first-time shot, which scored at the far post. Guest player and national Under-23 striker Gregory `Jackie Chan' Richardson made it 2-0, 12 minutes later.

The nippy Richardson stole the ball off the foot of an ambivalent defender to beat the goal keeper. However, Eagles responded after Camp-town's goal keeper Marlon Hendricks advanced outside his goal area to clear the ball.

As Hendricks scrambled to get back into the goal, the ball, booted in by Selwyn Isaacs in the 31st minute reached the target before him.

Camptown continued to have their way in the match but the floodgates were opened early in the second half. Looking 100 per cent improved as against when he played for the national team Browne was just inside the box when he converted after receiving a pass in the 59th minute.

One minute later the striker became the second player in the tournament to score a double when he expertly headed down the ball before shooting on the run.

Camptown sealed off the emphatic victory in the 60th minute when Nigel `Powers' Codrington was on target.

In the supporting game BV/Triumph got rid of Golden Stars with a 3-1 defeat.

National Under-23 Dwight Peters struck in the 37th and 52nd minutes, while former national Under-17 captain Jerome Richardson found the net two minutes before regulation time.

Golden Stars' lone goal came off the boot of Orin Adonis who scored from the penalty mark in the 86th minute.

"We knew coming into this game that we only needed to perform to half of our ability to win. It wasn't a hard game for us," coach of BV/Triumph Joseph `Bill' Wilson said.

The competition continues this evening at the Wales ground, where Beacon from Georgetown take on Silver Shattas of Linden in the feature game. All Star team will play West Demerara All Star in the supporting match.

Meanwhile, last year's finalist Western Tigers, who spent over US$700 preparing for the tournament, were given a last minute denial.

Stabroek Sport has learnt that Western Tigers, who took part in the recent Guyana Football Federation Futsal tournament, was given an eleventh hour exit after an objection by the Interim Management Committee running football in Georgetown. The organisers of the tournament were then instructed by the GFF that Western Tigers should be dropped from the invitational tournament.
