This year's Kashif and Shanghai competition continues to be a dream for clubs from Linden and a nightmare for those from Georgetown.

At the Camptown ground on Wednesday evening Bakewell Topp XX became the third team from Linden to secure a Kashif and Shanghai quarter final position after edging Santos in sudden death penalty kicks.

The four-time champions prevailed by a 6-5 margin after extra time failed to break the 0-0 deadlock in the match that saw both teams playing way below potential.

Topp XX now join Net Rockers and Milerock as the teams from the mining town already in the quarter finals. Santos' exit follows on the heels of the shock defeat of defending champions Fruta Conquerors by Net Rockers in Linden last Sunday.

Watched by a large crowd which included Guyana Football Federation President, Colin Klass, Santos emerged the more aggressive side but poor finishing during regulation time assisted in their early booting.

"It was a horrible game for us. I think that we performed poorly. We could have won the game in regulation time," Topp XX's player/coach Collie `Hitman' Hercules said.

However, Hercules, who scored the first penalty for his side added that Topp XX was able to hold its own when it mattered most. "There was a number of reasons for us playing like that. It was a combination of nervousness and playing on a new turf. We expected much more from Santos. We didn't know what the team would look like since we haven't played against them in years. However, we thank God for the victory."

After a tame first half, Santos had its first clear chance 15 minutes into the second half. With overseas-based goal keeper Richard Reynolds out of ground, left mid fielder Renault Fraser, who was alone in front of the goal, booted the ball way over the high bar. After the first five kicks by members of each team resulted in goals, Kurt Daniels denied Santos when his shot hit the far post to hand victory to Topp XX.

The four-time champions will clash with Milerock on Boxing Day in Linden in an expected scorcher.

"We have got a lot to do. We will have to go back to the drawing board. We have made a lot of mistakes but we will make ourselves right for the next game," Hercules concluded. Georgetown has only Western Tigers, Beacon and Camptown left in the tournament.

In the supporting game, the Rupununi team, Kanuku Invaders, made sure that the annual investment from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to bring them to the tournament paid off.

Vociferously supported by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Gail Teixeira, the Kanuku Invaders easily nailed Cougars All Star 2-0. The Invaders relied heavily on national Under-20 mid fielder Emrick Williams, an ace in the distributing department to take them to their first-ever victory in the competition and into the quarter final.

It took only four minutes for the team from the interior to start its trek to the quarter finals when Kenny Grant put the ball past goal keeper Ryan Kellowan.

Invaders then controlled the entire second half, but were limited by poor finishing. Finally, Williams teamed up with Steve Lamazon to seal the issue with two minutes remaining in the game. Williams sent a long pass to Lamazon who controlled the ball down the right wind before letting loose a rocket. Invaders will now play the winner of Sunday's game between Beacons and Silver Shattas.
