Parliament approves $701M for Linmine severance, wind up

Parliament on Thursday approved financial papers covering supplementary funds for several heads in this year's budget including $701M to wind up Linmine.

The Ministry of Finance was advanced $701.7M on top of the $2.5B for the Linden Mining Enterprise to be used to meet the cost for community power, severance payments and other severance-related costs for the company.

Financial Paper No. 4/2003 sought approval for current and capital estimates in the sum of $718.8M for the period July 31, 2003 to November 17, 2003.

Financial Paper 5/2003 sought approval for capital estimates totalling $3.7B for the period ended December 31, 2003.

Among other items on the financial papers was the sum of $326M to meet outstanding payments to Lagan International for works performed on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport runway. The Ministry of Health has been given an additional $375M for the New Amsterdam Hospital.

For its Guyana Basic Education Training programme, the Ministry of Education is receiving $27M, while $1.1B is going towards the Ministry of Housing and Water for its Water Supply Technical Assistance programme.

Outlined in Financial Paper No. 4/2003 was the cost of repairs to the Guyana Consulate in Washington DC damaged by Hurricane Isabel, for which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been allocated $981,250.

The Office of the President received approval for an additional $16M for the payment of consultants' fees for the consensus building component and purchasing of equipment for the public sector modernisation project. The funds will also be used to meet operational costs and salaries for the period April - July 2003.
