Officials in Guyana are still awaiting word from their US counterparts in relation to the investigation into the bust that saw 25 individuals most of whom were airport workers, being charged.
Sources had told Stabroek News that the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) is actively involved in the investigation along with authorities in Jamaica.
Reports had also indicated that local suspects would not be prosecuted in Guyana but the US would be seeking extradition orders.
The drug ring was busted after surveillance of flights out of Jamaica and Guyana found large amounts of cocaine and marijuana being shipped via cargo and in suitcases which were then diverted by airport workers out of the usual customs checks.
The investigation into the drug ring - which has allegedly been operating for the past 10 years - began in October 2002, after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized several shipments of cocaine on flights from Guyana. Heightened surveillance led to the arrest of an airport employee as he allegedly tried to divert luggage carrying 17 kilograms of cocaine. The employee co-operated with investigators and agreed to record conversations on recent drug shipments.
