Foreign Trade Minister Clement Rohee on Wednesday signed an agreement with China for a closer relationship between the state-run GTV 11 and the China Central Television (CCTV) 9.

Rohee and China's Am-bassador to Guyana Song Tao signed the Notes of Exchange in the main conference room at Takuba Lodge, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and under this cooperative agreement, the Guyana government will benefit from broadcasting CCTV 9 programmes.

"Additionally, based on the long, fruitful bilateral relations between the two countries, the government of the People's Republic of China will assist [Guyana] with the necessary technical requirements for the implementation of the project," a release from the local ministry said. Guyana and China have shared fruitful and friendly bilateral relations over the past three decades in a number of areas in economic and technical cooperation. Officials said Wednesday's signing would mark yet another initiative, which would contribute significantly to the strengthening and deepening of relations with China.

Government had made a request for the establishment of a cooperation programme between the Guyana Tele-vision Broadcasting Com-pany Ltd (GTV) and CCTV 9, under the Guyana/ China Technical Cooperation Pro-gramme, and China responded favourably.

Among those at the signing ceremony were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Foreign Trade Officer Samantha Rodrigues.
