Like last year, Guyana's top middle-distance athlete Cleveland Forde had to settle for fourth place in the overall placing of the Annual Run Barbados 10K, which was staged in the island on Sunday. Forde however won the under-19 category.

According to Forde, he returned 33 minutes .05 seconds (33.05) in placing fourth behind three Kenyan athletes. Three Kenyans also occupied the top three overall positions last year.

The winner returned 30.18 while the second and third place finishers clocked 30.20 and 32.08 respectively.

Forde told Stabroek Sport that during the event he was psychologically upset, having misplaced his Guyana passport before the event.

Forde explained that he went to make a phone call at a phone booth in Barbados on Saturday and somehow misplaced his passport. "This really upset me and I was thinking about how I will get home all the time during the race. But if I had run my personal best time for the event, I could have placed third," Forde stated.

Forde's personal best time for the 10K is 31.13 which he registered at the Inaugural South American 10K staged in Guyana in October this year.

Forde said when the race started on Sunday, the Kenyan trio went to the front and led to the finish, but they really accelerated the pace after the 6K mark.

The Carifta Games 5000-metre gold medallist said nearing the finish he was challenged by Barbadian 1500-metre Olympian Leo Garns but did well to hold him off and take the fourth place.

According to Forde, Guyana's Llewelyn Gardener won the masters 45-50 years age group.

Forde is grateful to his manager/coach Leslie Black for making his participation in the event possible. Black purchased Forde's return air ticket. Forde is also thankful to Carmen Cozier for sewing his running gear.
