The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, yesterday received the Disciplined Forces Commission's interim report on the Guyana Police Force.

The report was formally presented by Chairman of the commission, Justice of Appeal Ian Chang, at a ceremony at the Public Buildings.

Contained in the report are the commission's findings and recommendations for the Guyana Police Force, which were compiled after three months of public hearings around the country.

The National Assembly created the commission to inquire into the operations of the Disciplined Forces - the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Fire Service - to make recommendations for their reform and sustained development.

It was given a six-month timeframe within which to complete its work, but it was also required to give priority to the police force and submit an interim report within three months of the start of hearings.

The commission was unable to meet its original November 18, deadline and was granted its request for an extension at the last sitting of Parliament.

Ramkarran said the report would be made public once laid before Parliament, which would sit within the next two weeks.
