A safe recovered by police in the vicinity of the Lombard Street fire seems not to have an owner, as up to yesterday, no one had claimed it.

Assistant Public Relations Officer, David Ramnarine confirmed this yesterday, stating that the safe had not been opened. The police seized the safe from a group of persons on November 17.

The fire, which destroyed Royal Castle, Auto Supplies Company and Mohamed's Enterprise on November 13, was caused after a truck ran into a utility pole causing power lines to spark.

Proprietor of Mohamed's Enterprise, Nazar Mohamed said the safe in police custody did not come from his business. He told Stabroek News that the police had invited him to examine it and he concluded that the safe was not Mohamed's. He added that the two safes which Mohamed's had prior to the fire on November 13, had been accounted for, although they were vandalised by persons using crowbars.

Brian James of Auto Supplies Company, who has a part interest in Royal Castle, told Stabroek News that he saw the safe that the police had in their custody and it did not belong to either entity. He said further that safes from ASCO and Royal Castle were vandalised.
