A national Muslim women's group was recently launched when women of that faith gathered at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, and an interim committee of management was appointed.

A news release said that this committee will soon begin visiting masjids throughout Guyana to meet with Muslim women and to get them involved in the organisation.

National elections will be held in February next year to elect an official executive, the release stated.

The group plans to work closely with existing Muslim women's groups in Guyana and overseas as well as with government and non-governmental women's groups, and other religious women's organisations.

The organisation will act as a support group to the programmes and activities of the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman, the Guyana Islamic Forum and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex.

The women were briefed by Pakistani Muslim scholar to Guyana, Maulana Hafiz Noorul Hadi Haleem, on their roles and responsibilities in the Muslim community and the wider society. He challenged the group to fill the vacuum for an active Muslim women's group in Guyana.

The interim committee comprises Bibi Khan, Rabia Khan, Shakeela Bacchus, Ameena Khatoon, Shameeza Shakur, Desiree Ali, Sherry Ally and Zameela Khan.
