Several members of the Green Thumbs Environmental Club in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently converged on the University of Guyana minibus park at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown. Their mission was to sensitise bus operators and UG students about environmental friendliness, according to a press release from the club.

Members of the club exchanged views with minibus operators and others there about the role they can play in protecting and sustaining a good environment. A number of stickers to be placed in buses, caps to be worn by minibus operators, and jerseys bearing the club's emblem were distributed during the exercise.

According to the release, bus operators raised as a particular concern the troubling issue of passengers who litter by throwing objects out of bus windows while travelling.

President of the club is Nigel Dharamlall and the group was recently formed out of recognition of the need for greater awareness about the protection of the environment. Meanwhile, a programme to follow on this initiative has been planned and a garbage bin distribution exercise on the UG campus is expected to be undertaken soon, the release stated.
