Thousands of GPL's customers in the Stabroek/Werk-en-Rust area were affected by the fire that demolished three buildings at the Hadfield and Lombard streets junction in downtown Georgetown on Thursday night, but they were expected to be re-powered by last evening.
However, engineers were cautious about the transformer which cannot be tested until power is restored, a news release from the power company stated. If it is damaged, GPL said, a small portion of the affected area that includes the former GNCB building and the Ministry of Human Services may not be re-powered immediately.
A detailed assessment of the damage to the company's primary and secondary network in the area was still in progress yesterday morning while replacement equipment was being mobilised to repair the damage.
The entire feeder that extends from Access Road to Cornhill Street was affected. And the power company has to replace at least two poles on the primary network and two on the secondary, several pole spans of conductors (wire) and pole top equipment which may include the transformers that feed the circuit, the release stated.
