Over 200 Guyanese contract workers in Barbados recently attended an informational meeting sponsored by the Guyana Consulate on the island.

A news release from the consulate in St Michael, Barbados said the workers were briefed and updated by a panel of resource persons from a number of Barbados government departments, the consulate and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU). They received information on immigration, NIS, labour and trade union policies.

Honorary Consul Norman Faria gave an overview of the contributions of Guyanese contract workers and immigrants in Barbados.

The BWU's representative, Gordon Parris, noted that Guyanese have joined the union, the major one in Barbados representing construction and agricultural workers. He urged all migrant workers to know and insist upon their rights since they are protected under international labour agreements.

Faria said the meeting "is part of the outreach programmes of the Guyana government through the consulate, benefiting Guyanese contract workers and the Guyanese immigrant-community generally on the island."
