THE administration of the Mike Parris Fitness Centre is waiving membership fees to the gym in an attempt to get more Guyanese in shape for the Christmas holidays.

An official of the gym, which has recently been furnished with several new pieces of equipment, told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the membership fee of $3,500 will be put aside until January month-end.

The gym, which is situated in the National Park, is named after the lone Guyanese to win an Olympic medal.

Mike Parris won a bronze medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The gym is run by the Guyana Olympic Association, has three instructors and is frequented by many national athletes.

The doors are open at 5:30 am each morning. "What we are trying to do is to get Guyanese to be serious about keeping fit. Many people are not cognizant about the advantages of having a work out," the official said.
