A Trinidadian abbot has been appointed the Bishop of Georgetown following the resignation of Bishop Benedict Singh, a release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Georgetown said.

Abbot of the Monastery of Our Lady of Exile, the Right Reverend Francis Dean Alleyne, in Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago will replace Bishop Singh, who has resigned.

The release said that Head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II accepted Bishop Singh's resignation. Bishop Singh has reached the canonical age of retirement.
