CABINET yesterday approved a contract for $16.1M for the supply and installation of a close circuit television surveillance system at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

According to Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, the hi-tech system is being installed as part of a committed effort by Cabinet to enhance airport security and ensure the enforcement of law and order at the Timehri facility.

About 40 close circuit television surveillance cameras will be placed strategically all over the airport.

Dr. Luncheon said this system will provide the airport with the most comprehensive surveillance system in its first introduction.

Luncheon said this covers both the land site and the air site and also the entirety of the CJIA operations both at the arrival and departure areas, through customs and through immigrations, through handling, the executive lounge and the VIP suites.

"...it is the first phase because it moves seamlessly into the second phase, which is a similar such deployment at our seaports (whereby) customs presence at all of the wharves will be treated similarly," Luncheon stated.

He said what is more instructive about the close circuit television surveillance is that it provides for surveillance on site as well as surveillance at a distance.

"Our hope is that this would provide the greatest possible measure of revenue protection," Luncheon optimized.

He also announced at his regular post-Cabinet news conference at the Office of the President that Cabinet at its meeting yesterday also approved a contract for the conclusion of the construction of the Winfer Gardens Primary School in Georgetown. This contract is valued at $4.3M.
