TWO members of the Kissoon family were admitted to the Legal Bar yesterday bringing the number of lawyers in that family to 14.

Chief Justice Carl Singh and Justice of Appeal Nandram Kissoon admitted the new members, Shauna S. Kissoon and Satcha S. Kissoon, on petitions for admission presented by Attorney General, Mr. Doodnauth Singh, SC.

The new entrants are the children of two British trained Barristers, Latchman Persaud Kissoon and Ann-Roberta Hanoman, now practising Attorneys-at-law of the Barbados Bar.

In admitting the lawyers, who have already been admitted to the Barbados and Trinidad Bars, the Chief Justice noted that the new entrants had come from a great family - a distinguished father and mother and uncles - and therefore, the Court can expect the best from them.

The new entrants thanked the Attorney General for taking time off to present their petition, and also expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice and their uncle, Justice of Appeal Mr. Nandram Kissoon, for admitting them to the Guyana Bar.

Justice Kissoon told them that he did not think that they could have had a better person to present their petition than the Honorable Attorney General.

The Court of Appeal Judge told his nephew and niece that they were not entering a commercial business, pointing out that the law had never been commercial.

"Your duty is to your client," he said.

Attorney-at-Law Satcha Kissoon said that he was proud to be a Guyanese and a member of the Bar of Guyana.

In his presentation, the Attorney General Mr. Doodnauth Singh said that Shauna Sunita Kissoon was born in Guyana on April 9, 1979. She moved to Barbados in 1980 and obtained her primary education at St. Angela's Ursuline Convent. She then attended St. Winifred's High School where she obtained eight CXC O' Levels. Whilst at St. Winifred's, Shauna was Editor of the School Yearbook and was an active member of the debating society.

She completed her secondary education at the Barbados Community College where she obtained her advanced Levels in Law and English and an Associate Degree in Arts and Commerce.

Shauna entered the Law Faculty of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados where she read for a Bachelors Degree in Law, obtaining Second Class Honours. She was Assistant Editor of the Publications Committee, a member of the Law Queen Committee and participated in the Faculties concerts and productions.

In 2002, Shauna graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad with a Legal Education Certificate. At Hugh Wooding, she was Constitutional Chairperson of the Student Representative Council and she took advantage of the opportunities to develop her love for drama.

She was called to the Bar in Barbados on October 21, 2002 and is in chamber with her parents Ann-Roberta Hanoman and Latchman Kissoon who have an active and wide practice. Shauna has been admitted as a student member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London, England, the A.G. disclosed.

Her love for broadcasting led her to pursue and obtain a Diploma in Broadcasting with distinction from the College of International Radio Broadcasting in 2003. She was valedictorian and combines her career at the Bar with that of broadcasting.

Dealing with the petition of Mr. Satcha Kissoon, the Attorney General said that Satcha Subbas-Chanda Seamus Kissoon was born in Guyana, on September 4, 1976. He moved to Barbados with his parents at the age of three where he stared his primary Education at St. Angela's, Ursuline Convent.

He entered into his secondary education at Harrison College where he successfully obtained eight Grade Ones at the CXC examinations. He continued at Harrison College to complete his Advanced Level Cambridge exams in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Whilst at Harrison College, Satcha was Editor-in-Chief of the Kolijean Magazine, Harrison College's annual publication.

He obtained his Tertiary Education at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados where he read for a Bachelors of Science degree in Biological Sciences, a Double Major degree. This he obtained with Upper Second Class Honours. It was then that he began to pursue a legal career, entering the Faculty of Law, Cave Hill, where he successfully completed his Bachelors in Law Degree with Upper Second Class Honours.

According to the Attorney General, whilst at UWI, Satcha was active in the Law Society where he held the position of Publications Chairperson. During his tenure, he redeveloped the Plaintiff magazine, which had lain dormant for many years. Prior to this, he had been Associate Editor of the Student Law Review.

Satcha was awarded his Legal Education Certificate in 2003 from the Hugh Wooding Law School. At the Hugh Wooding Law School, he remained very active in student life. He participated in the Commonwealth Mooting trials as well as the Inter Law School Moots. The Hugh Wooding Team won this year's competition.

Satcha was presented with the Principal's Award for Advocacy as well as the Robert Mathieu Sellier Memorial prize for Trial Advocacy at the recent Graduation Ceremony at High Wooding. In addition to these, Satcha was previously awarded the prize for best Overall Impromptu Speaker at Hugh Wooding for 2003, illustrating his keen-ness for advocacy, the Minister of Legal Affairs, declared.
