LENNOX Cush was majestic. Yet with a brutal display of strength he was the driving force behind Malteenoes Cricket Club as they thrashed the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by 184 runs in a Carib Beer 40 overs first division match at the DCC ground, last Saturday.

National all-rounder Cush made 143 runs which included 12 fours and 14 sixes, in 77 balls. Shawn Thompson also did well for Malteenoes, taking five wickets.

Final scores: Malteenoes Cricket Club 362-5 in 40 overs, Demerara Cricket Club 178 all out in 22 overs.

Since in the finals of the Carib Beer four day first division competition when the two teams were adjudged joint winners due to a draw, it was decided that the rematch would be 40 overs with the winners not only walking away with the glory of an informal title but also approximately $50 000 in cash.

Winning the toss, DCC sent in Malteenoes to bat. For the first wicket Imran Hassan and Steven Jacobs carried the score to 32 before Hassan lost his wicket.

It was at this point that the hard-hitting Lennox Cush came to the crease and for the third wicket he and Jacobs carried the score to 134 adding 102 runs before Jacobs went for 37 runs.

Cush was next joined by Aron Frazer and for the 4th wicket the duo added 114 runs. When Cush and Frazer lost their wickets within two runs, captain of the side Neil Barry (45) and Dion Ferrier (42) added 101 for the 5th wicket, ensuring that their team reached the mammoth score of 362 for five in 40 overs.

When DCC replied they faltered, scoring 178 all out with only opening batsman Ronald Austin (57), Eion Katchay (37) and captain Travis Dowlin (24) making any significant scores as Malteenoes attacked with leg-spin.

Shawn Thompson grabbed five wickets for 26 runs off four overs, while Christopher Collins bagged two wickets for 52 runs off eight overs.
