Syria, Guyana hope for closer ties

GINA - Syrian Ambassador to Guyana Dr. Cahin Farah presented letters of credence to President Bharrat Jagdeo in the Credentials room of the Office of the President on Thursday last.

Dr. Farah conveyed his greetings from the Syrian Arab Republic while empressing the hope that there will be continued development of the two countries relations in all fields and he will be working towards that process.

President Jagdeo reciprocated the sentiments, saying that like Syria, Guyana is confronted with many challenges which have served to reinforce Government's resolve to work to propel the development thrust countrywide.

The President noted that the government has embarked on drafting national policies that would ensure development.

President Jagdeo expressed a warm welcome to the Ambassadar, saying that Guyana is intent on developing continued cooperation and development with the Middle East and that Syrian investment is welcomed and encouraged.

Dr. Farah is from Aldeia Hinns in the district of Catana, Syria and was born on December 16, 1943. He comes to Guyana with a wealth of knowledge. He holds a diploma in Law from the University of Damascus and was the Director General of a business undertaking for the preparation of leather in 1964.

During 1965, Dr. Farah worked with the Ministry of External Relations, during the years 1971 - 1976 he worked in the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Syria in Berlin, Capital of the Democratic Republic of Germany, for two years as Charge d Affairers.

In 1978 Dr. Farah served as doctor of International Law in the University of Germany after which he worked at the embassy of the Arab Republic of Syria in Bonn, Germany as Minister Plenipotentiary.

In 1985 he became the Director of the department of Observation and Investigation in the Ministry of External Relations and served for a period of one year.

In December 1986, Dr. Farah worked as Charge d Affaires in the Embassy of the Arab Republic in Bonn and a Chief of Mission.

In 1988, he bacame Syria's Ambassador in Greece after which he was the Director of the Consular Department in the Ministry of External Relations from 1994 - 1995.

He also served as the Director of the department for matters of Administration and Finance at the end of 1995 and served until 1997, after which he became the Director of the Department of Eastern Europe in 1998, the Director of the Department for Arab counties in 1999 and the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Syria in Havana, Cuba in 2001, then Syrian Ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil in 2001.
