THE Leader of the PNCR, Mr. Robert Corbin, is reportedly bringing political pressure to bear on the Advisory Committee on Broadcasting (ACB), as it fulfills its responsibility of ensuring that television stations operate in accordance with the conditions of their licenses under the Postal and Telegraphy Act.

According to reports, recent recommendations supported by the PNC/R nominee, following breaches of the condition of television broadcasting by Hoyte/Blackman Television (HBTV) or Channel 9 has not found favour with PNC/R Leader.

The ACB comprises Dr. Pat Dyal - a representative of the President of Guyana; Mr. Ron Case - a representative of the Leader of the PNCR/Opposition, and Mr. Carlton James - a representative of the private sector. These members were appointed following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between President Bharrat Jagdeo and late PNC/R Leader Desmond Hoyte in November 11, 2001. The Memorandum sets out clearly the guidelines for the work of the ACB, which it has followed in the main.

The recommendations against Channel 9 and other television channels - including GTV 11, CNS 6, NTN, and MTV - were made by unanimous support by all members of the ACB. But the ACB has come under political pressure for its legal response to complaints by the public against race hate messages broadcasted by certain talk show hosts and news commentators.

A source reported that Mr. Corbin has taken action, which "is tantamount to political interference in the work of the ACB, such as threatening to recall and replace the representative of the Leader of the Opposition."

The operation of the independent ACB is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.

Guyana Chronicle was unable to get a comment from either Mr. Corbin or any member of the ACB on this development.
