KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) - A burst of lightning that struck Mervyn Dillon and Fernix Thomas overshadowed a brilliant hundred from Shazam Babwah in the Zone-A match of the Red Stripe Bowl cricket championship between Trinidad & Tobago and Windward Islands that ended in a no-result yesterday here. Babwah, batting at seven, struck seven fours and four sixes in an undefeated 103 from 99 balls to help Trinidad & Tobago recover from early treachery to reach 198 for seven off 50 overs. Windward Islands never started their reply; a heavy lunchtime shower and persistent afternoon rain forced the umpires to abandon the match. T&T chose to bat, but courted danger at 47 for seven, after Darren Sammy wrecked their top order, capturing four wickets for 44 runs from his 10 overs.

At the height of the T&T eighth-wicket recovery, led by Babwah and Dillon, in bright sunshine, the bolt of lightning struck without warning. It was accompanied by explosive blasts of thunder. Dillon was struck hard on his left side, as he was about to face the first delivery of the 39th over from Thomas. Dillon slowly slumped to the ground complaining of severe earache and headache. Thomas was also hit hard on his upper back and ran wildly afterwards to the pavilion complaining of headache and a burning sensation across the back of his neck. Both players were taken for medical treatment at the nearby University Hospital, where they have been admitted for observation. Dillon, who retired hurt on 16, and Babwah shared 64 runs for the eighth wicket before the unfortunate incident to the West Indies fast bowler.

Then Dinanath Ramnarine entered to help Babwah carry their side the rest of the way. Sammy, bowling purposefully, got the big wicket of Lara when the world record holder sent a flick straight to Rommel Currency at square leg to leave T&T 35 for three. Earlier, Andy Jackson had top-edged a hook at Thomas to backward square leg in the fourth over and T&T captain Daren Ganga edged Cameron Cuffy to 'keeper Junior Murray in the fifth over. Following Lara's departure, Imran Jan was caught at square leg off Kenroy Peters for 12, to send T&T crashing to 43 for 4 before Sammy stepped into the picture to remove Dwayne Bravo, Aneil Kanhai and Dave Mohammed to put the twin-island republic in peril of falling for a ‘bingo number’.

Babwah, however, utilised nimble footwork and assured strokeplay as he worked the ball all around the ground during his innings. He gained essential support from Dillon and Ramnarine to beef up the T&T total before the rain robbed the two teams of playing to an exciting finish. Trinidad & Tobago, on 10 points, and unbeaten Jamaica, on 12 points, have effectively qualified for the semifinals. The two face each other in Sunday 's final Zone-A match at Sabina Park.
