The administration of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) will be taking disciplinary action against three staff members in connection with the death of a patient in the psychiatric ward early last month.

Esther Frances died after she broke her neck while attempting to escape from the ward through the ceiling.

A hospital source told Stabroek News that disciplinary action will be taken against a senior sister, an orderly and another staff member who all had a part in the incident “someway or the other”.

The source did not say what kind of action will be taken against the three but said certain recommendations had been made.

The matron’s office of the hospital had mounted an investigation into the death and later made some recommendations which were accepted.

The investigation had the input of the nurses, security personnel and the doctor on duty.

Sometime earlier this year the mother of one escaped through a space between two boards in the western wall of the hospital.

This time she reached the ceiling of the ward and pried two pieces of wood apart and stuck her head between them. She slipped and was left dangling from the ceiling.
