Mere words cannot describe the heartfelt feeling and high appreciations for Guyanese and West Indies test cricketers Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Both test cricketers made generous contributions for the realization of more than $2M that was need-ed to cover the cost of an emergency life-saving surgery for a young child, Solomon Garraway.

First Lady Varshnie Jagdeo must be complimented for her great work and influence as Patron of Kids First Fund. The togetherness, integrity and credibility of the First Lady, Reyaz Hussein and the management of NTN Channel 69, attracted a wide cross-section of Guyanese to be part of the life-saving event.

Chanderpaul and Sarwan are two young players who have had greatness thrust upon them. Their humble backgrounds and simplicity, coupled with their discipline are only some of their attributes that other sportsmen and women need to emulate.

First Lady, Uma Jagdeo was approached for assistance and she responded immediately when she initiated a telethon with popular talk show host Hussein and NTN Channel 69. Chanderpaul, who is presently at home preparing for the Regional Red Stripe Bowl competition, donated the bat with which he scored a century against New Zealand in St. Lucia along with his prestigious World Cup and Red Stripe jerseys, World Cup cap and pads.

The courageous World Cup champion-batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan donated his World Cup clothing which included jersey, pants and cap. The elegant, young West Indies vice-captain promised to assist the Kids First Fund in future endeavours to raise funds to help children in distress.

Today we are living in a changing world. Sports is the main avenue for unity and success. Sportsmen are social beings that are guided by their social consciousness. To be successful in life, it is necessary for mankind to appreciate what is taking place around him. Our people desperately need to appreciate that a healthy environment will lead to a healthy nation.

Guyanese sportsmen and women are achieving success and they are establishing themselves as world-class sports personalities. This patriotic feeling will undoubtedly build confidence in our people. Chanderpaul and Sarwan are two young men who are good listeners, who are role models to our youths in the way they approach life, particularly in their game of cricket. Both men live a healthy lifestyle, take their cricket seriously and have shown full respect for society.

Play on!! Chander and Ronnie, all Guyana are with you two `golden boys’. Let the sky be the limit, take West Indies cricket to the pinnacle of World Cricket.
