The joint statement from Monday’s meeting between President Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the Opposition, Robert Corbin, was not available up to press time. Stabroek News understands that it will be made available today.

Stabroek News was unable to reach Information Liaison to the President, Robert Persaud to ascertain the reason for the delay in the statement being released. Earlier in the evening Persaud had indicated that the representatives of the President and Corbin were consulting on the text. However, one of the decisions taken at the meeting is the dissolution of the Linden Town Council and to install an interim management committee. The PNCR, which Corbin leads, controls the Town Council.

While President Jagdeo was in the city, Corbin travelled to Linden to explain this decision to the people.

Council workers last week downed tools because they were yet to be paid their salaries for August and as a demonstration of no confidence in the leadership of the council.

Some members of the council are also at loggerheads with the Mayor Stan Smith because he reportedly did not consult them before taking a number of key decisions. Smith has been the object of a successful no-confidence motion by the Council but refused to step down as Mayor and his relations with his colleagues have not been smooth.
