Flights to and from the USA have been affected by Thursday’s power outage in that country and Universal Airlines has rescheduled a number of trips from today to August 20.

All Universal Airlines flights from New York have been pushed back a day up to August 20. The flight for August 21 remains unchanged.

Contacted to find out the situation regarding BWIA flights, Stabroek News was told that no one was available at the BWIA Robb Street branch to comment on the situation.

However, sources at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri told Stabroek News that one BWIA flight expected yesterday had been rescheduled. However, another expected later in the evening was on schedule and one scheduled for this morning was expected to arrive as planned.

One travel agent told this newspaper yesterday that because of the power outage BWIA had been unable to re-issue a ticket to her client since the airline’s computer system was down in New York where the ticket was issued. She said BWIA told her that they were unable to do the ticket manually. That passenger was due to attend a meeting in Miami this morning. No one at BWIA was able to shed light on this matter.

A staffer at North American Airlines told Stabroek News that while its flights had not been rescheduled, their computer system in the US had been affected and communication was difficult. As there was no flight to Guyana on Thursday, North American Airlines was not affected and the flight due yesterday afternoon was on schedule.

The staffer however said that because their communication systems with the US had been affected by the power outage, any changes in the schedule would be made public. (Miranda La Rose)
